People often ask me what it means to be a "Conservative Urbanite".
My response is usually the same whether talking to a liberal or a fellow conservative. I always say think Ward & June Cleaver living and raising their family in NY.
Conservative Urbanite's traditional values don't change just because they live in a metropolitan city. However, the experiences they encounter would most definitely have an effect on their political outlook. They may be a bit more progressive in their conservative beliefs and more understanding & empathetic to Liberal beliefs/values then a traditional Conservative living in a rural or suburban area would be.
A Conservative Urbanite simply means a free-thinking more progressive Conservative vs. a hard-line/extreme right Conservative. A Conservative that embodies what it means to be a Urbanite (see below).
Let me break it down...
A Conservative follows a broad system of political beliefs in the United States that is characterized by respect for American traditions, support for Judeo-Christian values, economic liberalism, anti-communism, advocacy of American exceptionalism, and a defense of Western culture from perceived threats posed by "creeping socialism", moral relativism, multiculturalism, and liberal internationalism. Liberty is a core value, with a particular emphasis on strengthening the free market, limiting the size and scope of government, and opposition to high taxes and government or labor union encroachment on the entrepreneur. American conservatives consider individual liberty, within the bounds of conformity to American values, as the fundamental trait of democracy, which contrasts with modern American liberals, who generally place a greater value on equality and social justice.
Webster defines Urbanite as one who lives in a city. An Urbanite is also defined as a person who inhabits one of the major cities around the world and are aged between 17 and 45. An urbanite is an affluent consumer with an optimistic outlook on life that is very different from those who live in "small town" or rural areas. Urbanites are both a subculture and a contemporary lifestyle. They have 6 key characteristics: Time-poor, city-proud, media-literate, brand-centric, trend-sensitive and culturally-aware. The British newspaper Metro has listed the 10 "Great expectations" that above all else motivate and drive Urbanites:
01. Expecting to live a meaningful and experience-rich urban life.
02. Expecting to succeed in multiple areas of life (not just career).
03. Expecting to get substantial fulfillment from work (not just cash).
04. Expecting to be at the hub of a large friendship network.
05. Expecting the traditional ideal of "true love" in the modern world.
06. Expecting to have to "make time" in order to have and enjoy time.
07. Expecting to use debt to have what they want, and have it now.
08. Expecting to have a progressive government that delivers results.
09. Expecting to live in a pleasant "urban village" area of their city.
10. Expecting to live a responsible life as an urban consumer.
Pull all of the above in a mixing bowl and out comes a Conservative Urbanite!
